Benjamin
Daniel Hoefler
September 28, 1979 – October 1, 2001

God’s
Man, Ben,
loved
and missed by his children, Noah, 7-15-1998 and Gabriella, 3-10-2000,
his
parents, Steven and Jacqueline, his brothers, Tom and Adam, and all who knew
him.
Briefly married to Sarah Rosenbaum Hoefler.
Ben
was a loving dad to his children,
but was lost to Brain
Cancer (GBM4) too early.
Ben
had a deep faith in his Lord Jesus Christ,
and
served in youth ministry.

Ben
was born in Denver on a beautiful fall morning, September 28, 1979 by
C-section after a hasty ambulance ride from Lakewood to downtown Denver.
His older brothers, Tom and Adam, were 16 and 11 years old. His father,
Steven, was a police officer and his mother, Jackie, was an accountant
both working for the State of Colorado.
|
Ben
attended Hutchinson and Devinney Elementary Schools, Dunstan Middle
School, Westland Christian Academy, Green Mountain High School, and
Red Rocks Community College.
|
He
accompanied his family on camping trips and enjoyed swimming at a young
age. Soon he was playing soccer, softball, basketball, and was involved
in Boy Scouts and church activities. In middle school Ben dropped out
of Boy Scouts in order to have more time for the church youth group.
As he drew near to the Lord, he determined that he would like to someday
be a youth pastor. At 15 he raised his own funding to go on a mission
trip to Mendenhall, Mississippi to repair a leaking roof for a person
in need. This was a character-building experience that he never forgot.
|
Ben
played soccer for both Lakewood and Columbine Soccer Associations. He
played fullback and then goalkeeper for a number of years. His team
took the championship several years. When his coach stepped down from
coaching, Ben spent a great deal of time and effort trying to rally
the other guys to keep their team together, but it was not to be.
|
By
the 11th grade he was experiencing some coordination problems and mini-seizures.
Early EEG and MRI tests showed a lesion on the left side of his brain
directly on the motor control center. Because of its location it was
considered too risky to perform a biopsy at that time. The consensus
was to wait and watch. Periodic MRI tests were scheduled, but suddenly
in November, 2000 the "lesion" was a cancerous and growing tumor. The
diagnosis was Glioma Blastoma Multiforme Stage 4. (GBM4) Now that the
tumor was growing rapidly and was lethal, the CU Medical Center Tumor
Board of Review determined that the only possible option was High Dose
Chemo and High Dose Radiation with a 2% chance of success. Ben bravely
chose that option hoping to buy a little more time, if not a cure.
|
During
this time, he met and married Sarah Rosenbaum and became the father
of Noah and Gabriella. Things got off to a rough start when Noah required
two open-heart surgeries as a newborn. Ben was a nurturing and caring
dad and enjoyed the children.
|
Ben
worked at Iron Age footwear as a warehouse manager and later as the
office manager, and then worked as a Customer Rep supervisor for Levi
products. In the spring of 2000 he went to work at Nextel Communications
and quickly worked his way up. He was in the Customer Care division
performing technical support. He loved his job and the people there
and routinely earned performance bonuses.
|
When
the cancer sidelined him in the winter of 2001, he pushed to return
to work in August, but had to go back on leave. Undaunted, he re-enrolled
at Red Rocks Community College instead.
|
During
the summer of 2001 when the cancer was in remission, he became part
of the Youth Ministry Team at Bear Creek Evangelical Presbyterian Church
(Lakewood, Colorado) working with the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. He
was able to convey his faith to the young people in a way that they
could understand.
|
Sadly
the cancer did not remain in remission, and Ben went to be in the Lord's
presence on October 1, 2001 at the age of twenty-two.
